Kokkola (the name of the town in Finnish) was founded on 7th September 1620 by King Gustav II Adolf, when it was known as Gamlakarleby. In 1977 when the town and district were combined the Swedish name was changed to Karleby. This name had been used on maps since the 16th century.

Kokkola is situated on the Gulf of Bothnia and is the capital of the province of Central Ostrobothnia. Kokkola is the northernmost bi-lingual town in Finland. Of the town’s population of 46,000, 85% speak Finnish as their mother tongue, with 14% speaking Swedish, 1% having another language. Since the 1st of January 2009 municipalities of Kälviä, Lohtaja and Ullava belong to the town of Kokkola.
