The City of Kokkola is in the process of drawing up a new green area programme. The programme will establish guidelines for the development of green areas, with its focus on the interaction between people and the environment. The green area programme survey can be found on the City of Kokkola website.
After the last glacial period, Kokkola has been in a constant state of change due to tectonic uplift and the shallow coast. As the environment changes, so does the city and its green areas. The green area programme will define the framework for future planning and development. The programme will serve as a tool for the maintenance, development and planning of parks.
Green areas include parks, playgrounds, neighbourhood sports areas, dog parks, green verges and roundabouts, beaches, stormwater areas, natural areas, meadows, protected areas, forests, and hiking trails. Some of these areas already have development programmes of their own, and therefore the green area programme concerns only built parks, green areas, and open spaces.
Residents of Kokkola can participate in the making of the programme by taking our survey. By filling out the survey, you can influence the development of green areas and share your views on how you would like to be part of green area planning in the future. The survey will be open until 16.11.2025.
The goal is to create accessible and safe green areas for all. The green area programme will take into account the quality and versatility of green areas. The aim is to have green areas that encourage social interaction and activeness as well as places for quiet retreat and solitude.
The green area programme will serve as the city’s Urban Greening Plan recommended by the EU Biodiversity Strategy.
