Staying strong as we age

The city of Kokkola offers physical activities to support the wellbeing and daily functioning of older adults. Through regular physical activity, it is possible to maintain functional ability, improve quality of life, and support living at home for as long as possible.

Shared exercise sessions also offer opportunities for social interaction and meeting new people. Research shows that physical activity is an effective and affordable way to promote the wellbeing of older adults in a comprehensive way.

  • Free gym slots for people over 65

The city of Kokkola offers free gym slots for people over the age of 65. These slots are intended for groups that have their own instructor. The instructor is expected to have some form of training in physical activity (for example, the Vertaisveturi instructor training). The instructor also acts as the group’s contact person.

    Allocation of gym slots

    • Gym slots are primarily allocated to new groups (one time slot per group).
    • Any remaining time slots are drawn among the applicants.
    • Groups that receive a time slot commit to providing a small service for the elderly – for example, organising a small event, a recreational moment, or another activity about once a month. You can also make donations such as knitted socks or other useful items. Details can be agreed upon with the activity coordinator of the service home.

The training provides knowledge and skills in strength and balance exercises for older people, assessing mobility and functional ability, and leading a group.

The next Vertaisveturi training will be organized in spring 2026.
