Can you calculate how quickly the land has risen to the height of Isokari Devil’s Boulder?

During the last ice age, the whole of Finland was covered by continental ice more than two kilometres thick. As the continental glacier expanded and retreated, the heavy ice mass carried away soil and eroded and crushed rocks.

Large boulders have also been carried far from their parent rock by the ice. As the ice melted, the boulders dropped to the seabed. When the land was freed from the weight of the continental ice, the ground began to rise. As the land rises above the water level, glacial erratics, or “devil’s boulders,” also emerge from the seabed. In the Kokkola area, the land is still rising by 0.8 centimetres a year. So in a hundred years, the land rises by almost one metre!

Glacial erratics are called devil’s boulders. The great hiisis, or giants, were believed to have thrown large stones around in anger.
