Grazing leaves its mark on vegetation

Can you see how the end of grazing is reflected in the landscape of Isokari?

In the past, the islands were used for summer cattle grazing. There has also been grazing on the island of Isokari.
Cattle were made to swim across the water or brought by boat to the islands in the summer. During that time, Isokari was not connected to the mainland. A causeway to the island was built later, in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The animals were allowed to graze freely on the islands. They were cared for by a shepherd. Sheep have been the most common grazing animal on the islands.

Grazing once kept the landscape of Isokari open and the vegetation low. Grazing has especially affected the culturally influenced groves in the interior of Isokari. In the groves, signs of past grazing can still be seen. The end of grazing is indicated by the thickening of the vegetation.
