Do you know why sailing races were originally organized?

Kokkola was once a centre of sailing ship activity. In Isokari, sailing activities began in 1906 when Gamlakarleby Segelförening built a small clubhouse, or pavilion, on the island for the sailing club’s use. That same year, the club built a marina on Isokari to meet its growing needs.

The sailing club organised races between Mustakari and Isokari. Originally, the purpose of the sailing competitions was to maintain seafaring skills. The sailing club sold the Isokari pavilion in 1916, and the association’s home port moved to Mustakari. Even before the pavilion was sold, the club’s 40th anniversary race was held on Isokari in 1912. Clubs from Vaasa, Uusikaarlepyy and Pietarsaari had been invited to the competition. Since then, the pavilion has been demolished and sailing activities have moved away from the island.

Kokkola has been called the city of a thousand sailing ships.
