Who lives in coastal lagoons?

Flads and gloes provide food and nesting sites for many species. Their shallow, nutrient-rich waters warm up early in spring. This makes them important spawning grounds for many fish and amphibians. Aquatic vegetation provides shelter for young animals from predators. Fish and the abundance of insects attract both breeding and migratory birds in search of food.

The gloe lake visible from the birdwatching tower is threatened by the spread of reeds and overgrowth. Reed beds reduce the area of open water and the number of waterbirds. Gloe lakes can be managed through grazing and mowing. Without management, they eventually become completely overgrown.
