Anders Chydenius - The Adam Smith of the North

Anders Chydenius (1729–1803) was an important political figure and influential vicar in the history of Sweden-Finland, and someone you can’t avoid hearing about when visiting in Kokkola. Chydenius name has been given to a street, school and
shopping center. He even helped shape his surrounding during his own time: the church in Kirkonmäki got its present form as a result of Chydenius work.

Anders Chydenius is first and foremost remembered as an advocate of free trade and industry. But his work for freedom of expression, openness of administration
and human rights was equally important.

Today Anders Chydenius’ heritage is honoured in a number of ways, e.g. through the activities at the Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius. An annual Anders Chydenius Free-Trade Seminar gathers both international and national experts to discuss current issues in his spirit.
