Neristan - Kokkola´s Old Town

Neristan is one of the more well-defined and extensive of the preserved wooden towns in the whole country. Over the centuries the appearance of Neristan has changed along with the land uplift, the development of the city and the perseverance of its builders.

The expansion of the city during the 20th century eased crowding but also raised the question of converting Neristan into a residential tower block area. Fortunately the authorities recognised the historical value of the district and decided to give it a protected status.

In the transition to the 21st century, Neristan has established its position as a living traditional town and a district of significance for national cultural history, in which the spirit of old Kokkola can still be sensed today.
